What are Dental Crowns?
A dental crown is a restoration used to help protect and support a tooth that has sustained moderate damage. Damage to any tooth can lead to other dental issues and should be treated as soon as possible.
You may need a crown for one of the following reasons:
- To repair a tooth that is broken at the gum line
- To restore a decayed area of the tooth
- To cover a tooth that is discolored or badly shaped
The primary function of a dental crown is to help support the tooth and protect it from further damage. Therefore, it is important to schedule an appointment with our Cheshire dental care team right away if you have a damaged tooth that needs treatment.
We offer the convenience of same-day crowns at our dental office with Dr. Renee Kurtz. We do this by using the CEREC technology that we employ in the office to create your crown in one visit.
Same-Day Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns
There are similarities and some differences between same-day and traditional crowns.
Similarities
- Both last about 10 to 15 years but will depend on the patient’s dental care routine and oral hygiene.
- Both costs about the same, but same-day crowns require fewer visits.
- Both are restorative techniques to cover the entire tooth that may be damaged.
Differences
Time and Convenience
A traditional crown procedure requires two appointments. The first appointment involves a consultation with your dentist to create an impression of your tooth. This impression is then sent to a dental lab, where the professionals will create a replica of the structure of your tooth. This process can take several weeks, and patients may need a temporary crown (which can be uncomfortable) while they wait weeks for the permanent crown to be made.
Same-Day CEREC crowns used CAM/CAD technology to create a crown in our dental office. There is no need for a second appointment; you will have your new tooth to restore your smile that same day!

Material and Strength
Traditional crowns can be created from several different materials, including ceramic, porcelain, or metal. Metal crowns are very durable, but this is not an option for those who have metal allergies. Metal options may be more durable. However, metal is also not as aesthetically pleasing, especially if being placed on a front tooth.
Same-day crowns are only made from ceramic. They are very aesthetically pleasing and will give you a natural-looking smile. If you need a dental restoration of your front teeth, the same-day crown may be a better option for you. The CEREC technology allows the dentist to provide a more comfortable fit and natural look and feel for a beautiful smile.
How CEREC Crowns are Created
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic. CEREC technology has given patients more convenience by creating a crown in a single visit. A CEREC crown uses CAD/CAM (Computer-AidedÂ
Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing) to make the crowns onsite. They offer the convenience of a new tooth the same day and allow for a better bite and a more natural look for a patient’s smile.
Dr. Kurtz will use a small camera to create a 3D digital impression of your mouth at your dental visit. A milling machine is then used to create the ceramic crown to fit your teeth perfectly. Next, the dentist will paint and glaze the teeth to match the rest of your natural teeth and then bond them. Finally, she will check your bite to ensure the fit is seamless and comfortable.
The entire process only takes about two hours, and you will not need another appointment or a temporary crown.
